Our thoughts and prayers are with the woman who was attacked Wednesday morning in Haile Plantation. We want to urge our members, and every Gainesville resident, to take care when exercising both inside and out. While not all attacks can be avoided, we offer these tips for staying safe.
- Have a jogging partner (This could be a next door neighbor, friend, spouse, or dog.)

- Don't jog at night.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- Become familiar with the area that you walk or jog in, and make mental notes of safe houses or safe places that can be used if the need arises.
- Do not use a “walkman or ipod” when jogging or walking in isolated areas at any time. This will reduce your awareness of the area.
- Change you routes and routines on a regular basis.
- Avoid jogging close to large vehicles, dumpsters, or other possible objects that can obstruct your view.
- Stay on main streets within view of passers by.
- Carry a Safety Device. Some pepper sprays are very convenient and attach to key chains or bracelets worn around the wrist.
